Gallantry Medal For Glasgow Terror Attack Hero
Glasgow Airport terror attack hero John Smeaton has been honoured for his bravery by being awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal at Buckingham Palace.
The 31-year-old baggage handler intervened and helped wrestle a terror suspect to the ground, when terrorists drove a burning car into the glass doors of the main airport terminal.
Smeaton subsequently became a minor celebrity, aided by television interviews he gave following the attack, including one where he warned would-be terrorists about coming to Glasgow, saying "we'll set about ye".
Dressed in a tartan kilt and bow tie, Smeaton received the medal from the Queen at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. Describing the day as "the proudest moment" of his life, Smeaton told reporters that the Queen was "very nice" and said that they had a "wee chat", where she told him "well done and congratulations".
Smeaton famously downplayed the accolades of heroism after the attack, telling 'The Sun' - "Anyone else would have done exactly the same as me".
However last year, he was awarded a 'Pride of Britain' award by the Daily Mirror and was presented with a CNN 'Everyday Superhero Award' in New York.
