Man Arrested In Heathrow Security Alert
A major security alert has been sparked at Heathrow Airport, after a man ran into the path of an aircraft on a runway.
It is believed that the man, who was carrying a rucksack, scaled the perimeter fence around 2:30pm today before running onto the airport's north runway.
The man was arrested and the bag recovered by police. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a controlled explosion had been carried out, but it is understood that no explosives were found.
Emergency vehicles are at the scene and it is understood that the runway is partially closed. There have been some delays and cancellations as a result of the incident.
A spokesperson for BAA Heathrow said: "The norther runway is now being partially used while police deal with the incident. The southern runway is fully operational. Some delays are occurring as a result."
The incident happened the day before the Queen is due to open the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow.
Last month, Greenpeace protestors breached security at the airport to climb on top of a jet in protest at proposed expansion plans at Heathrow.
