Good Friday Flutter As Betting Shops Open
Betting shops are open today on what is considered to be the most sacred date of the Christian calendar.
The Government has lifted the ban for the first time since they were legalised in 1961 in the controversial move.
At least 4,000 bookmakers' shops will open, including most branches of Ladbrokes and Coral, William Hill will open one in 10 of its shops staffed by those who have volunteered to come in.
Large numbers are expected to gamble today although there will be no British horse racing.
A spokeswoman for William Hill said: "I remember Sunday opening was seen as sacrilegious when that first happened, but people have got used to it.
"At the end of the day you can talk with your feet. You can choose to come here or not and I am sure there will be plenty that want to come."
However some Christian groups are unhappy with the opening.
The Rev Jonathan Carey from the Methodist Church said: "We are a little disappointed to see what is effectively the erosion of yet another special day.
"It just seems that more and more, every day is becoming yet another working day, 24/7 society, no time to relax and reflect and maybe have a day that's a bit special."
Those wanting a flutter will be able to bet on dog racing, as greyhound tracks across the UK will be holding races for the first time.

Gleneagles Object To T In The Park
The Gleneagles Hotel has lodged a formal objection against the staging of a T in the Park event at Strathallan Castle. The objection concerns noise and traffic levels at the Castle during any proposed festivals. It is understood that the festival site and the hotel are approximately 12.

Mirror Group Settles Four Phone-Hacking Claims
The Mirror Group Newspapers has settled a number of phone-hacking claims. It is understood Cilla Black, Darren Day, Jessie Wallace and Peter Andre have all settled their claims against the newspaper group, which produces titles including the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People.

Work Starts To Close Layby On A500
An eight day scheme to permanently close a layby on the A500 at Hanchurch, near Newcastle-Under-Lyme starts on Tuesday 27 May. The work, which will be carried out overnight on weekdays, is due to end on 5 June and requires a full closure of the westbound carriageway each night.

Study Finds No Link Between TV And Bad Behaviour
A study of some 11,000 primary school pupils has found that there is no link between watching hours of TV or playing video games, and bad behaviour. The Medical Research Council (MRC) team who carried out the study says it is wrong to link bad behaviour to TV viewing.

Couple Accused Of Witchcraft Killing Jailed For Life
The couple that murdered a teenage boy they accused of using witchcraft have been jailed for life. Fifteen-year-old Kristy Bamu and four of his siblings were visiting his sister Magalie Bamu, 29, and her partner Eric Bikubi, 28, when he was killed.
