Report Urges Revamp Of Computer Game Age Ratings
The ratings system for video games should be overhauled, a new report has said.
The review, carried out by psychologist Tanya Byron, recommends the introduction of a new ratings system, similar to cinema-style age ratings, aimed at the over-twelves.
Currently, only games, which show sexual activity or continue gross violence require an age rating from the British Board of Film Classification, with less than 2% of games carrying an 18 certificate.
The report also recommends that a UK body be created to draw up and oversee a national strategy to keep children safe online and also recommends that kitermarked filtering software should be sold with new PCs to prevent children from viewing harmful content online.
Dr Byron's report also recommends the creation of a website for parents which provides advice on online safety and a public information and awareness campaign on child internet safety.
The report also recommends the introduction of guidance for the computer games industry on advertising products, as well as improved efforts to increase parents' understanding of age ratings and improved parental controls.
