Blood-thinning Drug To Save Lives
Thousands of lives could be saved every year, thanks to Pradaxa, a blood-thinning drug becoming available in the UK.
That's according to the charity, Lifeblood, which has claimed that Pradaxa is the first new oral pill anti-coagulant in 50 years since the introduction of warfarin in the UK.
Dr Beverley Hunt, Medical Director of the thrombosis charity Lifeblood says that the "prevention of blood clots with blood thinners is not done well in the UK" and that she "very much welcome[d] the arrival of a tablet for adults undergoing hip and knee surgery".
Professor Simon Frostick, from the University of Liverpool said that "Pradaxa will be an attractive alternative to other regimens currently used to prevent venous thrombombolism".
A spokesperson for the British Heart Foundation said that the drug will "provide a significant step forward in improving care for patients at high risk of developing a blood clot".
The drug, which can be injected, costs £4.20 per day, which is almost the same as current treatments.
Blood clots cause around 25,000 deaths every year.
