Two Men Sentenced For 'Punishment Swim' Death
Two men have been sentenced to joint terms of five and a half years for the death of a 16-year-old boy.
Shane Owoo's drowned body was found in Lunt Pool in Bilston, West Midlands on 30 September 2007.
Birmingham Crown Court passed down the sentences after Christopher Lewis, 22, and Marvin Walker, 21 pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Tobias Davies, 21, who pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm was sentenced to 12 months in prison but was released immediately as he had already served 13 months in prison on remand.
The court heard that Shane had been forced into the pool for a "punishment swim" and that the defendants stopped the teenager getting out of the pool by throwing sticks and stones at him.
Detective Inspector Simon Richards, from West Midland Police said at an earlier hearing of the three men that Shane had taken a bike belonging to one of the defendants.
Presiding over the sentencing, Judge Peter Coulson said the act exhibited "extraordinarily callous behaviour" and that it "was a long and terrifying ordeal, deliberately inflicted on Shane Owoo".
Both Lewis and Walker will serve half their sentences in custody and the other half on licence.
Shane's family released a statement describing him as a "typical teenager" who loved music.
