Victim's Grandson Admits Hammer Killing

A man will be sentenced next week after admitting to killing his grandmother with a hammer.

It is reported that Russell Deane, 26, from Torquay bludgeoned his grandmother to death at a holiday home in Shaldon where she worked as a cleaner on 23 June last year.

Phyliss Deane, 70, from Newton Abbot, was found with multiple head injuries after she staggered from the premises.

She was airlifted to hospital but later died from her injuries.

It is believed that Deane had been waiting for his grandmother to turn up before he began the attack.

Prosecutor Martin Meeke, QC said that reports from two consultant psychiatrists agreed that the defendant suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

Mr Meeke said that Deane would receive a Hospital Order once he was sentenced.

Deane has originally pleaded not guilty to her murder at a hearing on 5 December, 2007.

Deane has been remanded in custody until sentencing next week at Exeter Crown Court.
