McCann's Hate Mail Revealed
As the sad one-year anniversary of their daughter's disappearance approaches this weekend, Kate and Gerry McCann have revealed how they were targeted with hate mail after Madeleine disappeared.
In the TV programme Madeleine, One Year On: Campaign For Change, Mr McCann is seen reading out a hate-filled rant contained in an otherwise innocuous Christmas card, complete with a snowman on the front.
The missing toddler's parents are branded "scum" in one vitriolic message, they reveal in the ITV1 documentary, being broadcast on Wednesday night.
The writer of the card calls them "thieving bastards" for using the money from the Find Madeleine Fund to make two payments on their mortgage: "Gerry and Kate, how can you use money given by poor people in good faith to pay your mortgage on your mansion?" the message reads.
"You f****** thieving bastards. Your brat is dead because of your drunken arrogance.
"Shame on you. I curse you and your family to suffer forever.
"Cursed Christmas. If you had any shame you would accept full responsibility for your daughter's disappearance and give all the money back. You are scum."
However, the couple insist that "99%" of the correspondence they have received is positive and Mrs McCann also tells how she reacted with anger and defiance as detectives declared her and husband Gerry "arguidos" or formal suspects.
The couple also speak more vividly than ever of the events of May 3 2007, the night Madeleine went missing in Praia da Luz, Portugal when Mrs McCann went to check on their sleeping children and found Maddie gone.
