Holiday Parents To Face Portuguese Court
A couple from Northern Ireland will appear before a Portuguese court today.
The holidaying couple allegedly collapsed while in charge of their three children aged one, two and six.
It is alleged that upon arrival at the Aparthotel Mourabel in Vilamoura on Friday afternoon for a weeklong break, Eamon McGuckin, 34, passed out on a sofa in reception and his wife, Antoinette, 32 fell asleep at the bar.
The couple were then taken to a health centre in nearby Loule while social services took care of the children.
A spokesperson for the local police said that they were contacted when hotel staff had tried to stir the couple as their children Adam, Amy and Aaron had been crying.
Police officers from Portugal's Guarda Nacional Republica spent 45 minutes at the family's hotel apartment on Monday evening.
It is not believed that the couple will face neglect charges.
A source close to the couple said they "are very sorry about everything" and that they are "ashamed". The source added that factors such as the heat and tiredness may have contributed to them passing out.
The couple - who have since been given considerable support from friends and family at hom - will appear before the Family and Minors Court in Faro today.
