Drowning Prompts Safety Warning
A warning has been issued to young people in the Humberside area following the death of a young boy in a pool.
The boy, who has not been named, drowned after swimming in Ashbyville Pond, which is a former gravel pit.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 6.30 yesterday and were told that a young local male had gone missing in the water.
His body was recovered from the water shortly before 9pm and was taken to Scunthorpe Hospital by an RAF Sea King helicopter from RAF Leconfield, in Beverley, East Yorkshire.
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service spokeman Glenn Ramsden said that "emergency services are gravely concerned about the safety of people playing in or near to water".
He added that "water has the ability to take life in seconds" and appealed to people to "stay away, especially in the light of the recent sunny weather".
An investigation is underway and a post mortem is due to take place later.
This is not the first death to be claimed by the pool.
In August 2000, 12-year-old Louise Wood and Hayleigh Hinton drowned after they got into difficulties while playing in the pond.
