Father Jailed For Tax Credit Scam

An Aberdeen man has been jailed for fraudulently claiming up to £80,000 in child tax credits.

Irvin Fraser, 30, a father-of-two claimed the benefits totalling £79,718, for 36 children.

He has been jailed for 13 months at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.

Fraser said he made fraudulent claims from Tullos Circle and Abbey Road between November 2003 and June 2006.

Fraser said he "wanted to stop but it just snowballed and spiralled out of control".

Presiding over the case, Sheriff Alexander Jessop said it was a "whacking" amount to be paid.

Fraser spent the money on his children and his wedding at Duthie Park's Winter Gardens in 2005.

It is reported that Fraser was a recovering heroin addict and began the scheme to fund his habit.

His lawyer, Shane Campbell said that as a result of this case, the Department of Work and Pensions will "revisit their methods of keeping a check and verifying claims of this particular nature".

A spokesman for HM Revenue and Customs said in a statement that "they had systems in place for checking fraud and that the majority of claimants were honest".

He added "this one slipped through the net, it took us a while but we got him in the end".
