Woman Dies In London Bus Crash As Police Car Fatality Probed
A woman was killed this morning in an accident involving a London bus while a separate investigation has been launched into the death of a GCSE student who has been knocked down by a police patrol car in Newcastle.
The first fatal incident occurred last night as the Northumbria Police marked car was believed to be hunting for a stolen vehicle.
The 16-year-old girl, named locally as Hayley Adamson, was pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts by the emergency services to revive her.
It is understood Hayley was due to sit her English GCSE exam today.
A 23-year-old local man was arrested for a public order offence after the incident.
Assistant Chief Constable Sue Sim said the incident was "a tragedy" and appealed for people in the area to "remain calm while an investigation is carried out".
The force says that it is assisting an inquiry by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
An IPCC spokesman said "our investigators have been at the scene since last night and further inquiries are underway until we can establish the full circumstances of the fatality".
Roads around the collision scene were closed as an investigation got underway. West Denton Road remains closed and traffic diversions are in place. The A191 is also closed to northbound traffic from the A1 Scotswood Road.
This is not the first time a civilian has been hit by a police vehicle. Earlier this month Kenneth Thiel-Furber, 26, died after being hit by a Vauxhall Vivaro police van on the A41, near the Wrexham Road roundabout.
In April, a woman died from her injuries after allegedly blocking the path of a Serco security van carrying prisoners in Brixton.
Meanwhile, adding to the death toll of people killed in road accidents, a woman pedestrian was killed when a bus crashed into a tree on Tower Bridge Road this morning.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said that a further 18 people were injured.
Six ambulances arrived at the scene, five patients with minor injuries were taken to hospital, a further four patients with more serious injuries were also admitted to hospital.
An eyewitness is reported as saying: "I saw the bus lose control...The driver then got out. He was shaking and couldn't say what happened and fainted on the street."
Transport for London has launched a full investigation into the crash.
