'Unwell And Agitated' Gazza Sectioned For Second Time
Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has been 'sectioned' under the Mental Health Act - for the second time this year.
Hertfordshire Police have revealed that the 41-year-old - nicknamed 'Gazza' - was taken to hospital on Sunday after he had approached a member of the public. He was said to be "unwell" and in an "agitated state".
Gascoigne was previously detained under the Mental Health Act in February, following an incident at a hotel in Gateshead, Newcastle.
The former midfielder - who played for Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, Glasgow Rangers and Middlesbrough - has had a well-publicised battle with alcohol and associated health problems.
He was also hospitalised in January 2005 with pneumonia and last year underwent surgery for a perforated stomach ulcer.
Referring to yesterday's incident, a Hertfordshire Police spokesman said they were called just after 12.30pm on Sunday following reports a man had "approached a member of the public who was unknown to him".
The spokesman added: "Officers checked and accompanied the man to hospital so he could be checked over. He was sectioned under the Mental Health Act."
