Sainbury's Suspends Online Service

Sainsbury's has suspended its online grocery service after "technical difficulties".

The supermarket giant was forced into the action after a computer fault was spotted on Tuesday.

It is understood people who have placed orders have been contacted and have been offered a £10 voucher in compensation.

Sainsbury's says on its website: "We have temporarily frozen our online home delivery website having identified a technical issue. We are contacting customers directly whose deliveries have been affected. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes you."

It is believed the fault was noticed when people's addresses were not registering on the system.

Sainsbury's say that customers who ordered goods to be delivered on Thursday should still get them.

The supermarket has stressed that people's personal details are not at risk.

It is reported that the online grocery business attracts 90,000 customers a week.

Sainsbury's have reported a 40% increase in online sales in the 12 weeks to June 14 despite a poorer performance in other sales.

Justin King, Chief Executive of Sainsbury said "the challenging economic environment continued throughout the quarter" but that the supermarket is serving "nearly 18 million customers a week".
