Student Killed On Way To Collect GCSE Results

A teenage girl has died after being knocked down while on her way to collect her GCSE results.

The 16-year-old girl, who has not been named, was hit by a refuse lorry at 9am near to her school Ysgol Gyfun Treorci in the Rhondda, south Wales.

Paramedics treated the student as she lay trapped under the vehicle on Conway Street.

Crews from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service freed her from the wreck and she was rushed to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant where she tragically died from her injuries.

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust said they had a crew and rapid response vehicle at the scene within three minutes of the call.

An air ambulance also arrived at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Rhonnda Cynon Taf County Borough Council confirmed a refuse truck had been involved in the incident and that the "situation was very much in the hands of the police".

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said "one man is helping police with their enquiries".

Officers remain at the scene and a full investigation is underway.

Appeal For Information After Man Is Left Critical In Park Attack
South Wales Police are searching for a number of people in connection with a daytime attack on a 19-year-old man in a park in Cardiff. Police said the victim is in a critical condition in hospital following the attack, which happened on Monday at about 13:45 at Tremorfa park, Cardiff. Former police officers arrested in Lynette White murder case
Five retired police officers have been arrested as part of an investigation into the murder of a Cardiff prostitute 17 years ago, South Wales police have confirmed. Twenty-year-old Lynette White was found murdered in a flat in the Butetown area of Cardiff on Valentine’s Day, 1988.

Fatalities After Mid-Air Plane Crash
Four people are feared dead following a mid-air aircraft collision near a nature reserve. South Wales Police were alerted to the accident which occurred near the reserve at Porthcawl, just before 11am on Wednesday. Jeff Tildesley, Deputy Mayor of Bridgend Council, said he believed at least two people were killed in the incident.
