Fuel Leak After Tanker Overturns
A rail tanker has overturned in Gloucestershire and is leaking fuel. The vehicle derailed close to the Beacon Hotel in Haresfield just before lunchtime on Friday. Police said that despite the leak it does not pose a threat to public safety. A Gloucestershire Police spokeswoman said: "The tanker, which was carrying liquid fuel and which was the last of 28 tankers, derailed and overturned on tracks." Three roads have been closed as a result.
Turning The Tide On Rising Household Bills
Many water customers will see the second water bill of the year arrive shortly, and with some water companies announcing that they would like to raise prices further, there may be ways to reduce what seem to be ever growing household costs, says independent water watchdog, the Consumer Council for Water. Customers without a water meter may be able to save money by having one installed. People who do not use much water and live in a larger home are most likely to benefit. For example, a single person living alone in a property with an average rateable value could save around £100 by having a meter installed. A water meter calculator is available on the Consumer Council for Water's website, where customers can work out if installing a meter could save them money.
Six Foreign Ships Under Detention In UK
The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced today that 6 foreign flagged ships were under detention in UK ports during August 2008 after failing Port State Control (PSC) inspection. Latest monthly figures show that there were 3 new detentions of foreign flagged ships in UK ports during August 2008 and 3 vessels under detention from previous months. The overall rate of detentions compared with inspections carried out over the last twelve months was 4.4% a slight increase on Julys' twelve month rate.
'Working At Height Roadshow' Visits Kent
Construction companies in Kent will have the chance to learn about safe working at height and preventing workplace injuries during a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) roadshow next week. The Working at Height Roadshow will be held on Thursday 25 September at the National Construction College in Erith, Kent, between 3-7pm. The roadshow, organised by HSE and other stakeholders, is designed to suit the needs of all construction firms and comprises a series of practical demonstrations, presentations and exhibits relating to working at height.

Plans Announced To Make Young People Work For Benefits
The Prime Minister has announced a proposal for 18 to 21-year-olds claiming benefits to do daily work experience. The proposed reform, known as Community Work Programme, would see young people not in work, education or training, required to complete daily work experience, alongside continuing to look for work in order to qualify for benefits.

Burst Water Main Causes Chaos
A burst water main has caused considerable flooding in Glasgow. A statement from Scottish Water said: "An issue with a faulty valve which regulates pressure has resulted in burst water mains in Mount Stuart Street, Shawlands; Cowcaddens and Duke St at the junction of East Wellington Street and Shettleston Road.

Water price rise proposals 'unacceptable for customers'

Water firm to introduce meters
A water company in the south east of England has been given permission to install compulsory water meters in homes. Folkestone and Dover Water Services was granted "water scarcity status", which will allow it to force all 65,000 homes in its service area to install meters.

Water companies lift hosepipe bans
Several water companies have eased restrictions on water usage by lifting hosepipe bans today. Thames Water, Southern Water, Three Valleys Water and Sutton and East Surrey Water have announced the end of restrictions this morning. However, customers of South East Water and Mid Kent Water remain subject to hosepipe bans.
