Gross Mortgage Lending Drops In September

Gross mortgage lending reached an estimated £17.7 billion in September, a decline of 10% from August and 42% from September last year, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML). Gross lending for the third quarter is estimated at £62 billion down 16% from the second quarter of 2008 and 37% from the third quarter of last year. A seasonal fall is typically experienced between August and September. However, £17.7 billion is the lowest gross lending figure since January 2005 and the lowest September figure since 2001. CML Director General, Michael Coogan, said: "The mortgage market is open for business. But weakening consumer demand and ongoing funding constraints will dampen monthly lending figures for the rest of this year and into the first quarter of 2009. We estimate gross lending in 2008 will be around £255 billion (£363 billion in 2007) and net lending of around £40 billion (£108 billion in 2007)."

Drugs Team Celebrates Success

A Coventry project that has helped put more than 900 drug users back on track and in doing so has contributed to cutting crime in the city by a quarter since 2004 has been praised by Home Office Minister Alan Campbell today. On his first Ministerial visit and during a tour of the Coventry Community Drug Team's building he met with staff, service users, council and police representatives which coincided with the one year anniversary of their move to the Ironmonger Row office. A key priority for the team is reducing drug related crime by engaging with problematic drug users, providing them with appropriate treatment and supporting them through and after treatment, whether they are in custody or in the community. Evidence shows that clients need to remain in treatment for at least 12 weeks for it to be effective. Over the last year Coventry has retained 85% of its clients for 12 weeks or more.
