Small Growth In Xmas Online Shoppers Predicted
A drop in online spending has been predicted for this Christmas, with only a 15% growth in internet shopping expected.
This is in stark contrast to the 54% year-on-year increase in online shopping in the UK last year.
According to figures published by IMRG and Capgemini, British shoppers will spend a total of £13.16bn in the fourth quarter of 2008, representing £215 for every person in the UK.
The data is calculated from 60 British online retail sites.
Capgemini's Mike Petevinos said: "Online sales look set to ride the economic storm and continue to be the place retailers can look for growth.
"Getting this channel right and overcoming the delivery issues of last year will be key."
Falling house prices, rising unemployment and growing fears of a recession have already hit traditional retailers hard.
Online sales of clothing, footwear and accessories are set to hit £1.26bn during October, November and December, according to the survey.
Sales are still expected to buck general economic trends and rise more than 25%.
Monday 8 December is forecast to the biggest UK online shopping day of 2008, with sales worth £320m.
