Government Approves Oil And Gas Exploration
The government has granted seven North Sea exploration licences to allow three major energy companies hunt for oil and gas.
Genesis Petroleum Corp, Faroe Petroleum and Stratic Energy Corp were awarded permission under the UK 25th Licensing Round by the newly created Department of Energy and Climate Change.
Two licences, one west of Shetland and one in the Southern Gas basin were won by Faroe and its partners.
Faroe has a 30% interest in the West of Shetland Frontier Licence and a 20% stake in the Southern Gas Basin Traditional Licence.
Genesis subsidiary Genesis Exploration & Production Ltd, along with its partner Lundin Petroleum, has been awarded interests in two licences comprising 11 blocks.
Stratic Energy was awarded three blocks in the Southern Gas Basin and in the Central North Sea.
Yesterday, Genesis shares were up 2.6% at 20 pence, while Faroe shares were down 5.7% at 75 pence.
Stratic shares remained untraded, after closing at 14.5 pence.

Centrica Posts £1 Million In Profits - To Consumers Anger
British Gas owner Centrica has posted half-year profits of almost £1 billion - much to the anger of consumer groups. Centrica maintain that it has been "absolutely necessary" to raise household gas prices as profits were down 20% in the first six months of this year to £992 million - down from £1.23 billion in 2007.

One Killed In Village Blast
One person has died following an explosion at a house in Warwickshire. Fire crews who had been called out to a fire in the village of Ullenhall discovered the person at around 4pm on Thursday. The fire was extinguished by about 5.45pm. No one else was injured in the fire.

EDF To Takeover British Energy
The Government welcomed EDF's proposed £12.5 billion takeover offer for British Energy Group and the British Energy Board's recommendation of the offer to its shareholders. The Government has committed to accept the cash offer of 774p per share for its 36% stake held by the Nuclear Liabilities Fund (NLF), subject to certain conditions.

Gas and electricity prices to rise by over 14%
