Newlove Killer Loses Conviction Appeal
A youth jailed for the murder of a man who was kicked and punched "like a football" has lost his appeal against his conviction.
Adam Swellings, 20 was sentenced to life imprisonment for the alcohol-fuelled murder of father-of-three Garry Newlove, who was kicked to death after he confronted vandals outside his home in Warrington, Cheshire, last year.
The 20-year-old - described as the ringleader of the gang - was ordered to serve a minimum of 17 years in prison.
Today, at the Court of Appeal, Lord Justice Moore-Bick and two other senior judges rejected the youth's case that his conviction was unsafe.
The judges have also begun hearing Swellings's appeal against his sentence.
At the same hearing, co-accused Stephen Sorton, now 18, of Warrington, has appealed for his sentence to be reduced from its minimum term of 15 years.
Jordan Cunliffe, formerly of Rowland Close, Warrington was jailed for a minimum sentence for murder. He has not appealed against his conviction or sentence.
