Mother Calls For Jail For Murder Suspect
A murder suspect who escaped from a mental health unit should have been in prison, his alleged victim's mother has said.
John Clayton, 28, escaped from the Springfield Hospital in Wandsworth, south London late on Tuesday evening, Metropolitan Police said. Mr Clayton was being held at the hospital for a psychiatrist assessment.
Chris Wallace, whose 22-year-old son Ben Foster was killed in April, questioned the security of the South London mental health unit, where Clayton escaped. He is accused of the murder of the young man.
Mr Clayton escaped with fellow detainee John Slavin, 44, who is awaiting trial on charges of aggravated burglary.
Scotland Yard has warned members of the public not to approach either man.
In a statement issued through Avon and Somerset polices she said: "This man has been charged with the murder of my son Ben. I would urge anyone who knows where he is to contact police immediately, so he can be brought to trial.
"I would hate for any other family to go through the pain we are suffering. I am concerned that given the severity of the charges he faces he was not detained securely.
"In my view if he had remained in remand in prison he would not be at large now."
Officers investigating the escape said they are using helicopters and ground search units in their attempts to find the two men.
They were reported missing just after 10pm on Tuesday evening.
