National Express Announces 750 Job Cuts

Rail and bus firm National Express has announced it plans to cut up to 750 jobs in a bid to save £15 million a year.

The company, based in Birmingham, said it was offering voluntary redundancies. However, it did not rule out making any compulsory cuts.

National Express, said that while the proposals are still subject to consultation, a total of 750 roles included a previously announced plan to close a call centre in Norwich.

Around 18,000 people in the UK are currently employed in the company which runs buses, coaches and East Anglia Rail franchises.

Earlier this month, South West Trains operator Stagecoach announced its plans to axe jobs in support services and administration.

National Express chief executive Richard Bowker, said: "Looking ahead, the transport sector cannot be wholly immune from the global recession.

"While cautious about the economic outlook, we are taking the initiative to reduce costs across our UK operations and counteract any slowdown in growth."

Despite tougher conditions, National express said passenger revenues for its East Coast operations were up more than 9% so far this year.
