More Weekend Shoppers Head For The High Street
More shoppers hit British high streets over the weekend than in the same period last year, it has been revealed.
Footfall during Friday, Saturday and Sunday was up 2.7%, according to figures released today.
Market analyst Experian cited the time of week New Year's Day fell on as a possible reason for the increase.
The researcher suggested the holiday falling on a Thursday may have encouraged more people to take Friday off work, creating a shift in shopping patterns.
Last year the first day of the New Year fell on a Tuesday, which meant many returned to work on the Wednesday.
However, Experian has said the increased shoppers will not necessarily be reflected in sales' value.
"Though this first critical weekend of the year for retailers to shift stock has started with some positive footfall, an increase in the number of shoppers will not necessarily denote revenue, especially with the reduction of prices being offered to lure the consumers," Experian said.
"Retailers are facing an extremely difficult year ahead as the slowdown in consumer spending adds to the pressure, increasing the risks of insolvency," added a spokesperson.
