UK Unemployment Reaches 1.92m
The number of people out of work has risen by 131,000 to 1.92 million, between September and November, new figures have shown.
This is the highest total of unemployed in Britain since September 1997.
The statistics released do not take into consideration the tens of thousands of people who have become unemployed since November 2008.
Meanwhile, the number of those claiming jobseeker’s allowance increased 77,900 to 1.16 million, the Office for National Statistics revealed.
Employment minister Tony McNulty said the figures were "very disappointing" and predicted things would "get worse before they get better".
Earlier this week, the Ernst and Young Item Club, predicted the figure will hit 3.4 million by 2011.
The growing economic crisis was further highlighted by a wave of job losses in luxury brand Burberry with the loss of 290 jobs, and food firm Vion which cut 820 positions.
