€50,000 Donation To Help Rid Cyprus Of Landmines
Minister for Europe Caroline Flint today announced that the UK would donate €50,000 to the UN Mine Action Centre in Cyprus.
Caroline Flint said: "The UN Mine Action Centre has been a highly successful confidence building measure, helping to build trust between the communities. It has cleared an area around the size of 240 football pitches and is now close to delivering its goal of a mine-free buffer zone. The work of the centre was vital in enabling the Ledra Street crossing point to open. This donation will cover the running costs of the Mine Action Centre for February and March while they seek to raise further funding."
Taye-Brook Zerihoun, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Cyprus, welcomed the contribution.
"This donation comes at a critical moment, as the MAC urgently needs more funds to continue its essential work beyond January," he said. "On behalf of the MAC I thank the United Kingdom for its contribution and hope it serves as an example for others to follow."
The Mine Action Centre requires a further €2m to continue its work this year and €5m to completely clear landmines from the buffer zone.
