Short Week For Jaguar Workers

Jaguar Land Rover workers have voted to take a one-year pay freeze and move to a four-day week in an attempt to save jobs. Workers' unions balloted the firm's 15,000 staff over the cost-saving measures. A total of 70% of the Unite and GMB union members accepted the deal which will save the firm £70m a year. The deal was offered by the car manufacturer last month, in return for no compulsory job losses for two years. 450 jobs were cut from Jaguar Land rover – owned by Indian firm Tata – in January.

Investigation After Boy Dies

An investigation is underway after an 11-year-old boy collapsed and died in Dundee. Tayside Police said they arrived at the boy's home in Longtown Place at about 7.50am and found the youngster suffering an apparent cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. A post mortem examination is due to take place to establish the cause of death. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Man Arrested After Stabbing

A man has been arrested after another was stabbed in the chest in what police describe as "disorder" involving two men and a woman in a city street. Gwent Police said a 30-year-old man was in a stable condition in the Royal Gwent Hospital following an incident in West Park Road, Newport. Officers were called at around 5.30am on Thursday and closed West Park Road and Bassaleg Road. A 25-year-old man remains in police custody. Police said the woman in the incident was uninjured.

Young Girl 'Stable' After Being Hit By Bus

A 12-year-old girl is in a stable condition in hospital after being knocked down by a bus in Ayrshire. The girl was struck by a Western Stagecoach bus while crossing Corse Hill Mount Road, Dreghorn, Irvine, at about 1pm on Wednesday. She sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock before being transferred to Glasgow's Yorkhill Hospital. No-one on the bus was injured. Police have appealed for witnesses.

Council Watchdog Appoints New Board Member

The local government watchdog - the Standards Board for England - has signed up its newest board member today, appointed by Hazel Blears, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. Local Government Secretary, Hazel Blears, has appointed Councillor Stephen Knight, Liberal Democrat councillor from the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, as the new Liberal Democrat representative to the board for a three-year term. The Standards Board for England's role, as a light touch regulator under the locally based conduct regime, is to promote and maintain high standards of conduct for members of local authorities in England, providing support, advice and guidance to assist local authorities in their treatment of allegations of misconduct by councillors.

Conservatives propose local police commissioners
Conservative leader, Michael Howard, has announced plans to introduce local police commissioners, as part of the party's law and order policy. Mr Howard unveiled plans to replace "remote and unaccountable" police authorities across England and Wales, with directly elected local police commissioners.

British Man Dies In Dubai Police Custody
A British man has died in police custody in Dubai. Lee Bradley Brown, 39, from east London, died on Tuesday after he was taken to a Dubai police station where he was allegedly assaulted and put into a cell. It has been reported that Mr Brown, was arrested over a row at the luxury hotel Burj Al Arab hotel.

Man Arrested Over Kent Doctor's Murder
A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a doctor in Kent. Consultant paediatrician Dr Victoria Anyetei, 54, was found in her car in the driveway of her home in Dartford on August 14. She had been stabbed to death. Kent Police said that the man was arrested on suspicion of murder at an address in Dartford.

Madeleine's Mother Questioned By Police
Kate McCann, the mother of missing British girl Madeleine McCann, is being re-interviewed by Portuguese police. Her husband, Gerry McCann, will be re-interviewed tomorrow. Mrs McCann arrived at Portimao police station in the Algarve at 2pm local time on Thursday. She was accompanied by her lawyer Carlos Pinto de Abreu.

'Armed Siege' Ongoing In Glasgow
Armed police have responded to an "ongoing incident" in Boyd Street in Glasgow. Police Scotland confirmed that officers armed with guns and shields had been called to a property in the city's Govanhill area at about 11:20 on Monday. According to the BBC, police have told local people the incident is an "armed siege".
