Pope Condemns 'Abominable' NI Attacks
The Pope has condemned the murders of security service members in Northern Ireland as "abominable acts of terrorism".
Pope Benedict's words came after the killing of two British soldiers at a County Antrim barracks at the weekend, and the execution of police officer on Monday night in the town of Craigavon.
Dissident republican groups the Continuity an Real IRA have claimed responsibility for the attacks. The Pontiff, giving his weekly general audience, said: "I condemn in the strongest terms these abominable acts of terrorism which, apart from desecrating human life, seriously endanger the ongoing peace process in Northern Ireland,
"I ask the Lord that no one will again give in to the horrendous temptation of violence," said His Holiness.
Peace rallies were held across Northern Ireland today in defiance of the recent killings.
Trade unionists joined churches and members of the public to send a clear message to the terrorists that there should be no return to violence.

Two million expected to pay tribute to the Pope
Around two million people are expected to flock to Rome to pay tribute to the late Pope John Paul II, ahead of his funeral, which will take place on Friday morning. The body of the 84-year-old pontiff, who died on Saturday, will lie in state from this afternoon at St Peter's Basilica and members of the public will be able to pay their respects.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will meet Pope Francis in Rome next month. The visit, from 14th to 16th June, will focus on the joint modern slavery and human trafficking initiative launched by Archbishop Justin and Pope Francis earlier this year.
