Labour Peer Freed After Appeal
The Court of Appeal has released a Labour life peer who sent and received text messages while driving on the M1. Lord Ahmed, 51, was jailed for 12 weeks, after his involvement in a fatal crash minutes after sending the text messages on Christmas Day 2007. He hit a stationary car in the outside lane of the motorway, killing Martyn Gombar, 28. Lord Ahmed, who was jailed after admitted dangerous driving last month, has been freed after serving 15 days of his sentence.
Mourhino Investigated Over Alleged Assault
Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho is being investigated over claims he punched a fan after his team's defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford yesterday. Mr Mourinho allegedly punched the supporter close to the Inter Milan bus as he left the ground last night. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that they are investigating an allegation of common assault. A police statement read: "Shortly before midnight last night a man reported that he had been punched in the face outside Old Trafford. We are investigating an allegation of common assault." A spokesman for Manchester United confirmed they are aware of the allegation but made no further comment.
Man Dies After Being Dragged Under Bus
A 52-year-old man who was dragged under a bus in Bristol while trying to cross the road has died from his injuries. A woman who was with him received serious fractures to her lower leg, in the accident in Old Market Street on Wednesday afternoon. It is believed the pair had been trying to cross the Old Market roundabout when they were struck by the double-decker. The area was sealed off for more than two hours, causing long tailbacks during the evening peak.
Prisoner Found Hanging In Cell
A prisoner, who was due to be released as early as next week, has been found hanging in his cell. Gareth Thomas, 27, was serving a two-month, 18-day sentence for theft and non-payment of fines. He was discovered hanging by HMP Cardiff staff early on Tuesday. A Ministry of Justice spokesman said staff attended to him, but he was pronounced dead about 90 minutes after he was found. The Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "HMP Cardiff prisoner Gareth Thomas was found hanging in his cell at 7.45am on Tuesday March 10. Staff attended but Mr Thomas was pronounced dead at 9.14am. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Thomas. As with all deaths in custody, the prisons and probation ombudsman will conduct an investigation." A Ministry of Justice spokesman said staff attended to him, but he was pronounced dead about 90 minutes after he was found.
Rok Profits Drop 76%
UK building firm Rok has reported that its profit before tax plunged 76% to £5.9 million, from 24.5 million in the last year. The profit figure includes £12.2 million of restructuring costs, but does not include an £18.6 million loss from the closure of Rok Development. The firms annual revenues from continuing operations rose to £1.01 billion, from £874.7 million in the previous year.
Water Companies Face Enforcement Action For Failure
The regulator today published its 'Approach to Enforcement'. This sets out how Ofwat will protect consumers by using its enforcement powers where companies fail to comply with their obligations. Regina Finn, Ofwat Chief Executive Officer said: "We expect every company to fulfil its obligations. Where a company fails its customers, we will take proportionate action to deal with those shortcomings. Any sanction we take will reflect the seriousness and impact of a company's failure. We do have the power to fine companies, but reserve this measure for the most serious misdemeanours. We are here to protect consumers' interests. If customers have suffered as a result of company failings, we expect the company concerned to act swiftly to make sure those customers don't lose out."

Charges follow investigation into NHS fraud allegations
Nine people and five companies have been charged following a Serious Fraud Office investigation into conspiracy to defraud the NHS. The criminal charges relate to alleged price fixing and market sharing by suppliers of generic drugs, especially warfarin and penicillin-based antibiotics such as amoxicillin and ampicillin.

Sony is to create 26 new jobs at its manufacturing base in Bridgend, Wales. In a statement, the firm said the roles would be on the production line and at its UK Technology Centre (UKTEC) in Pencoed.

Gurkhas To Begin Hunger Strike In Pension Protest
Some 60 Gurkhas are preparing to begin a hunger strike in protest over the governments alleged refusal to give them equal pension rights. At 13:00 today two Gurkhas will begin a hunger strike, followed 24 hours later by two more, building to a mass hunger strike on 07 November.

Former NotW Journalist Charged Over Phone Hacking
A former News of the World journalist is to be charged over four alleged offences as part of the ongoing investigation into the phone hacking scandal. Dan Evans faces two counts of conspiring to intercept the voicemail of "well-known people and their associates", the Crown Prosecution Service has said. The charges date between 2003 and 2010.
