'Homeless' Youngsters Stay With Parents

Changed times and economic hardship has led to a sea change in the way young men and women are living in the UK.

A new report has shown that almost a third of men and a fifth of women aged between 20 and 34 still live at home with their parents.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), during the second quarter of 2008, 1.8 million young men and 1.1 million young women were still living with their parents, an overall increase of about 300,000 since 2001.

The ONS suggests this may be down to high property prices, unemployment and people choosing to continue their studies.

The statisticians' annual survey on the state of the nation also found more people were living alone in the UK, up from 6% in 1971 to 12% in 2008.

The figures also suggest marriage is becoming increasingly unpopular.

In 2006, there were 237,000 marriages in England and Wales, the lowest number since 1895.

The Social Trends survey suggests people are getting married later in life and women are delaying motherhood, while grandparents are likely to be helping out with child care.
