Boy 'Stable' After Caustic Soda Tank Fall
A nine-year-old boy is in a stable condition in hospital after falling into a vat of caustic soda.
Brooklyn Briggs, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, plunged through the roof of a derelict building in Rawmarsh, when he was trying to retrieve his football.
While he was climbing on the roof, it gave way and he crashed through to the ground below, landing in a tank containing the chemical - also known as sodium hydroxide - once used to strip furniture.
According to witnesses, they heard the boy's screams for help and when they arrived at the scene, he looked as though he was covered in blood.
The nine-year-old was initially taken to Rotherham District General Hospital yesterday, before he was transferred to the burns unit at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Brooklyn's mother, Tracey Briggs, told BBC Radio Sheffield a friend had helped him out of the tank.
She said: "One of his friends actually came up to our house and knocked on the door, screaming that Brooklyn had dropped into some acid.
"My husband Gary ran down the street [and] I got in the car and drove down.
"As I got there he was in Gary's arms just screaming 'help me daddy, help me daddy, please help me'."
The accident is now being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive with assistance from the police.
