Burglary And Robbery Figures On The Rise
The number of burglaries and robberies has risen in England and Wales, according to new crime statistics launched today.
Recorded crime figures from police forces in the two countries have revealed a 4% rise in domestic burglaries between October and December.
An unexpected 25% rise in personal theft was also recorded in the Home Office statistics.
However, overall property crime was down by the same amount with falls in vehicle break-ins, other thefts and criminal damage.
The separate British Crime Survey, which measures people's experience of crime, shows that crime remained stable in 2008 compared with 2007.
The number of killings carried out using knives or other sharp instruments fell by 12% between October and December, the figures showed. But robberies at knifepoint were up by 5% to 4,283.
Figures for serious violent crime have been excluded from the statistics, however, because of concerns over their accuracy.
Ministers have suspended their publication after it emerged 18 forces were not counting attacks where serious harm was intended but did not happen.
