Newcastle's Barton Suspended Following Red Card
Newcastle United midfielder has been suspended by the club "until further notice" following a lunging tackle on Xabi Alonso at Liverpool on Sunday.
Barton, 26, was given a straight red card following the challenge boss Alan Shearer described as "Stupid", during Newcastle's 3-0 loss at Liverpool.
Stand-in manager Shearer condemned the challenge, saying Barton had let down himself and the club. According to reports, the 26-year-old was involved in a row with him after the game.
"Joey Barton has been suspended from the club until further notice," a Magpies statement read. "The club will be making no further comment at this time."
Barton, who joined the club for £5.8 million from Manchester City two years ago, was making his first appearance for Newcastle since January after recovering from a foot injury.
Following a series of injuries, and a 74-day spell in prison after he was sentenced to six-months in prison for affray and common assault, the midfielder had only appeared 32 times for his club.
In July last year, Barton received a four-month suspended sentence for assaulting Ousmane Dabo in a training-ground incident while both players were at City.
He was banned by the FA for 12 matches - six of which were suspended - and fined £25,000 after admitting a violent conduct charge in relation to the Dabo incident.
