Police Station Shut Following Death

A police station is South Wales has been shut following the sudden death of a 21-year-old woman. Investigations are continuing following the arrest of a 49-year-old man at the station in Porthcawl, Bridgend county borough. The entrance of the station was taped off as an inquiry was launched, and a notice on the door read: "Due to incident, station has had to close". The Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust confirmed they attended the police station at 1.20pm on Wednesday, but said they did not treat anyone or take anyone to hospital. South Wales Police said they expected the Porthcawl station to reopen on Thursday morning "as normal".

American Hillwalker Dies

A 51-year-old American woman has died after being seriously injured during a hill walk in Sutherland. woman was reported overdue from a walk near Durness at about 4.50pm on Wednesday. A search was launched involving the police, mountain rescue and an RAF helicopter from Lossiemouth. The woman was found seriously injured and was transferred to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by helicopter but was pronounced dead on arrival.

20-Year-Old Quizzed Over Suspected Arson

A man has been quizzed by police over an arson attack on a house in Merseyside. The 20-year-old was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after a petrol can was thrown through a property in Daley Road, Litherland, early on Sunday. However, it failed to ignite. A Vauxhall Vectra car seen leaving the area was later found burned out in Broad Lane, in Netherton. The incident is the latest in a series of arson attacks in the Sefton area over the past few months.

Man Treated After Cliff Rescue

A 21-year-old man is being treated in hospital after falling 30ft (9m) from cliffs at Constitution Hill in Aberystwyth. Coastguard and RNLI lifeboat crews were called out at 10.15pm on Wednesday after the alarm was raised. A coastguard spokesperson said the man had been walking in the area when he decided to do "a bit of climbing". He was taken to Bronglais hospital and is understood to have suffered a broken leg in the fall.

MoD Fights Battle Against Thirst

British troops operating in the hot climates of Afghanistan are testing two innovative water filters to give them access to emergency drinking water in the heat of the battle. The Pure Hydration Expedition Field Pump System, produced by Farnham-based BW Technologies, allows the individual to draw water from a contaminated source, purify it by removing bacteria, waterborne pathogens, sediment and heavy metals and pump it back, decontaminated, into the service issue Camelback. The Lifesaver Bottle, produced by Ipswich-based Lifesaver Systems, is pumped manually to filter dirty water through a membrane. The muddy water is then instantly decontaminated to remove bacteria, viruses, fungi and waterborne pathogens. Over 4,000 filters are being trialled with members of 19 Mechanised Brigade currently serving in Afghanistan.

British Man Dies In Dubai Police Custody
A British man has died in police custody in Dubai. Lee Bradley Brown, 39, from east London, died on Tuesday after he was taken to a Dubai police station where he was allegedly assaulted and put into a cell. It has been reported that Mr Brown, was arrested over a row at the luxury hotel Burj Al Arab hotel.

Man Arrested Over Kent Doctor's Murder
A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a doctor in Kent. Consultant paediatrician Dr Victoria Anyetei, 54, was found in her car in the driveway of her home in Dartford on August 14. She had been stabbed to death. Kent Police said that the man was arrested on suspicion of murder at an address in Dartford.

Riot Police Deployed As G8 Protesters Occupy Former Police Station
Some 100 riot police have been deployed in central London as protestors take to the streets to demonstrate ahead on the G8 summit being held in Northern Ireland next week. Officers were sent to Soho, where protesters are thought to have occupied a former police station on Beak Street.

Teenage Girl Arrested Over Body Find
A girl and a 41-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of murder after two bodies were discovered in Suffolk. Suffolk Police said that the first body was found yesterday morning at around 11am after a member of the public called police to express concern for the welfare of a woman in a flat at Victoria Street.
