Teens Bailed Over Fire Death
Two youths arrested over a suspected arson attack in south London that killed a 15-year-old girl have been released on bail. Three teens aged 14, 15 and 17 had been arrested in connection with the fatal arson attack. The 14-year-old remains in custody, but the other two have been bailed. Maleha Masud died on 25 June, four days after the fire in Tooting which left brothers Zain, 22, and Junaid, 16, and their sister Nabiha, 21, seriously ill.
Body Found Confirmed As Missing Man
A body found in the Orkney Islands has been confirmed as that of missing father Robert Rose. The 54-year-old vanished from Sanday on Saturday 6 June, leading to appeals from his children and police for information. Northern Constabulary has now confirmed that a body recovered on Sanday on Thursday is that of Mr Rose. His family has been informed. John Campbell, 59, has appeared in court charged with Mr Rose's murder. Mr Campbell and 50-year-old Stephen Crummack, both of Sanday, were charged with attempting to defeat the ends of justice. The two men made no plea to the charges and have been remanded in custody.
MPA appoints new MPS Assistant Commissioner Specialist Crime
The Metropolitan Police Authority yesterday, 30 June, appointed Cressida Dick to become the Metropolitan Police Service's new Assistant Commissioner Specialist Crime. This makes Assistant Commissioner Dick the first permanent female appointment at this level in the Met's history. The role of Assistant Commissioner Specialist Crime provides strategic and effective leadership and vision on homicide, serious and organised crime, including gun crime and economic crime, child abuse and covert policing amongst its duties. Cressida Dick is currently Deputy Assistant Commissioner Security and Protection in the MPS.
Climber Flown To Hospital After Fall
A climber was flown to hospital after falling 100ft (30.5m) part way down a cliff on the Cumbria coast. Ross Jervis, 53, of Lamplugh, Cumbria, fell from St Bees Head, south of Whitehaven, late on Tuesday evening. He was lowered to the base of the cliff and taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in an RAF rescue helicopter. A coastguard spokesman said the climber was being treated for head, leg and stomach injuries, which were not thought to be life-threatening. Members of Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team were also involved in the rescue operation.
Woman Dies, Child Injured, In Accident
A woman died and a child was treated in hospital following an early morning road crash in south Essex. The west-bound carriageway of the A127 near Basildon was closed after the accident and is not likely to reopen until late morning. A lorry and another vehicle collided at the scene just after 4.00am, a police spokesman said. Police are still at the scene near the junction with the A128 and traffic is building up, causing congestion.

Survey reveals falling level of some crimes
The overall crime rate in England and Wales is continuing to fall, according to the results of the British Crime Survey (BCS). The survey showed that the overall crime rate fell by 11%, in the year ending September 2004.

Police And Crime Commissioner Resigns Over Rotherham Abuse
Shaun Wright, South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner, has resigned over the Rotherham child abuse scandal. Mr Wright had refused to step down despite growing calls for him to do so in the wake of a report on the extent of child abuse in Rotherham between 1997 and 2005. Mr Rotherham was head of child services in the town from 2005 to 2010.

Police Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands, Bob Jones, has died. Mr Jones, 59, died in his sleep at home in Wolverhampton on Monday night, according to the West Midlands Police. Mr Jones was elected the first West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner on 15 November 2012, after a long and distinguished career in public service.
