Quad Bike Rider Dies In Cliff Fall
A quad bike rider has died after going over the edge of an 80ft cliff at a beach in the Western Isles, it has emerged. Coastguards were alerted by a friend of the 20-year-old at about 11.00pm after the accident happened near Glen Tolsta on Lewis. The quad bike rider was airlifted from the scene by helicopter, however, was declared dead on arrival at Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway. Northern Constabulary said: "Police are carrying out inquiries in relation to the incident but there do no appear to be any suspicious circumstances. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.” The man's identity will not be revealed until next of kin have been informed and formal identification has taken place, police added. The man had been biking with his 19-year-old friend.
Government Outlines Plans To Outlaw Blacklisting
The Department for Business today launched a consultation on new regulations that will make it unlawful for trade union members to be denied employment through secret blacklists. Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said: "Blacklisting someone because they are a member of a trade union is totally unacceptable. I am determined to act quickly to stamp out this despicable practice. Today's proposals outline how we will deliver this." This consultation will run for a shorter than usual period of six weeks to enable legislation to be brought forward as soon as possible. Ministers plan to seek Parliamentary approval for the regulations in the autumn and implement them urgently as soon as it can thereafter.
Man Held Over Sexual Assault
A 31-year-old Leeds man has been arrested in connection with a sexual assault on a 20-year-old woman, which happened in Victoria Road, Hyde Park, in the early hours of Sunday. The man was arrested in Hyde Park last night by officers from the North West Inner Neighbourhood Policing Team. He is currently in custody at Weetwood police station.
Savings For Gas Customers
E.ON has announced that it will remove the standing charge for its gas prepayment meter customers. Having offered one of the lowest gas prices throughout the winter months, E.ON is also reducing gas prices for the majority of its gas customers, saving them around £25 a year. Jim Macdonald, Commercial Director of E.ON's Retail business, said: "We're delighted to be able to remove the gas prepayment meter standing charge which we had promised to do last year. "We're committed to offering competitive prices at all times and delivering on our promises." E.ON has also urged its gas prepayment customers to top-up and credit their meter as soon as possible in order to make sure they take advantage of these changes.
Roy Taylor Made Director Of Social Care Flu Resilience
The Department of Health has appointed Roy Taylor as the new National Director for Social Care Flu Resilience, Care Services Minister Phil Hope announced today. Mr Taylor will take up the post today. He will report to David Behan, Director General for Social Care. He will also work closely with Ian Dalton, the National Director for NHS Flu Resilience. Mr Taylor will be responsible for ensuring that all social care organisations in England build on the robust planning that is already in place to deal with a flu pandemic.

200 Homes Still Without Gas After Water Leak
Around 200 homes in Wales are still without gas after a burst water pipe flooded gas lines last Thursday. Wales and West Utilities have said that some 150,000 litres of water has been pumped from gas pipes since last Thursday, with 540 of the 755 homes affected by the leak, now reconnected.

Centrica Posts £1 Million In Profits - To Consumers Anger
British Gas owner Centrica has posted half-year profits of almost £1 billion - much to the anger of consumer groups. Centrica maintain that it has been "absolutely necessary" to raise household gas prices as profits were down 20% in the first six months of this year to £992 million - down from £1.23 billion in 2007.

The price cut, which will benefit 8 million households, takes effect immediately and makes British Gas, on average, the cheapest supplier of standard gas and electricity right across Britain - no matter which way customers choose to pay.

Illegal Gas Fitter Sentenced
A man who falsely claimed to be a registered gas engineer has been sentenced for illegally installing gas appliances at addresses in York. Bennett Morley of Cherry Paddock, Haxby, York, was prosecuted by The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for five offences under Gas Safety legislation after complaints by householders.

British Gas Invests For Vulnerable Customers
British Gas have announced that it is making a new investment of £37 million in support for its vulnerable customers. Each customer on British Gas' Essentials social tariff will receive £50 as a credit on their winter bill. Prepayment customers will receive the credit direct to their meter.
