Fishermen Drown Off Scotland

Three sailors lost from a boat off the coast of Scotland have been confirmed as dead after their vessel foundered.

Four men had been collecting scallops yesterday evening when it overturned in the vicinity of Bo Fascadale, around a mile and a half north of Kilmory, Ardnamurchan on the west coast.

A major search operation was launched when a member of the public saw the boat overturn off Ardnamurchan at around 5.10pm and raised the alarm.

The stricken sailors were found off the coast of Ardnamurchan with two recovered by the Mallaig RNLI lifeboat and taken to hospital, where one was pronounced dead on arrival.

The survivor - who was not wearing a life jacket - was pulled from the water by the crew of a yacht called Arran Comrade, which was responding to a coastguard mayday call.

The other two men were recovered by helicopters, one operated by the Royal Navy and the other by the Stornoway Coastguard.

Both were airlifted to Broadford Hospital on the Isle of Skye but were also pronounced dead on arrival.

Local police said that details of the dead sailors will not be issued until the next of kin have been informed and formal identification has taken place.
