18-Year-Old Dies In Car Crash

A teenager has been killed and his passenger seriously injured in a crash on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The teenager had been driving his blue Mazda along Frogston Road West at about 9.45pm on Tuesday when he hit a tree near Mounthooley Loan junction. After being cut free, along with his passenger, the teenager was taken to hospital but died from his injuries. His passenger remains in a critical condition in the Western General Hospital.

Potter Tops Box Office

This week's latest blockbuster movie has been confirmed as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release. The sixth movie in the wizard series pulled in a huge £19.7 million to take the record for the biggest opening of 2009. However, Ice Age 3 maintains its place in the runners-up spot, while Brüno slips to number three. The Hangover and Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen round out the top five. The chart's only other new entry, sci-fi film Moon, lands at number eight - but with a limited UK release. Other top ten UK films are Public Enemies in sixth place; My Sister's Keeper in seventh place with Year One at ninth and Night At The Museum 2 in at number 10.

Appeal After Teen Robbed

Police are appealing for witnesses after a 15-year-old boy was robbed in Bradford. Airedale and North Bradford CID would like to speak to anyone who has information about the incident which took place on Allerton Road in Allerton, North Bradford at about 4.15pm on Monday July 20. The incident took place after the victim (who is from the Idle area) was approached by two teenagers and threatened. Fearing that he would be assaulted he handed over his Samsung mobile phone to the thieves who ran off. The first of the suspects was described as Asian, 14-15-years old, about 5ft 9ins tall, thin and with short black hair which was gelled all over. He also had a thin pointed face and was wearing a black, possibly waterproof, jacket with a full zip. The second suspect was described as Asian, about 15-years-old, 5ft 6ins tall, and thin with short black hair with a fringe. He was wearing a waist length orange jacket.

Bus Damaged In Blaze

Firefighters have tackled a blaze on a bus thought to be carrying people to the Royal Welsh Show in Powys. There were no injuries and all of the passengers on board were accounted for, said Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service. The bus was "severely damaged" in the incident on the A470 between Builth Wells and Brecon, at Felinfach, shortly after 6.00am. It is unclear what caused it the fire, and diversions are in place. Three fire engines and more than 15 fire-fighters were called to the scene.

Warning Over Distraction Burglaries

Police officers in Sandwell are warning elderly people to be extra vigilant after a spate of distraction burglaries across the Borough. Officers are asking residents, neighbours, family and friends to be on their guard against doorstep tricksters, and to keep an eye out for the elderly. A number of distraction burglaries have occurred in recent weeks, with bogus callers hoaxing residents into believing they are from the Water Board, and more unusually, rat exterminators. Officers are appealing to residents not to open the door to strangers and to always ask for identification.

Cabin Crew Member On Drug Charges

An airline cabin crew member has been charged with attempting to smuggle drugs into the UK after cocaine was seized at Gatwick Airport. UK Border Agency staff said they found cocaine with an estimated street value of £98,000 in baggage that arrived on a Ghana Airways flight from Accra. The drugs haul weighed about 4.4lb (2kg), officers said. Ghanaian national Kwaku Asante Ayirebi, 30, is due to appear before Mid Sussex magistrates later. Bob Gaiger, a spokesman for HM Revenue and Customs, said: "Crew members are subject to the same customs checks as any other person when entering the UK."

Theft From Cash Machine In Prudhoe

Police in East Tynedale have released CCTV images of someone they are wishing to trace in connection with a theft from a cash machine. The incident happened at just before 3pm on Tuesday March 31st at the Co-op store on Front Street, Prudhoe, when a member of the public had used the cashpoint to check their balance and left their card in the machine. A woman has then used the cash machine and card to withdraw £100 before making off. Police want to trace the woman pictured in the CCTV images who may be able to help with their enquiries. She is described as being in her late 40's, around 5"4 to 5"7 in height and with shoulder length wavy auburn hair and was wearing an ankle length blue skirt and white v-neck top.

Postmasters call for safeguard of rural offices
Postmasters are calling for urgent action by the government in order to safeguard rural post offices. The National Federation of Subpostmasters held a rally in London on Wednesday, while a petition of four million names was handed into 10 Downing Street. The NFSP general secretary Colin Baker warned that this was now "crunch time" for post offices.
