Farmer Dies After Being Trampled By Herd

An elderly farmer who was trampled by his herd of cows after they apparently were frightened by a fire engine, has died in hospital.

Harold Lee, 75, was moving the cows to be milked with his son Richard at Robins Farm, Burtle in Somerset, when the incident happened.

Mr Lee suffered injuries to his head and chest when the animals stampeded. he was airlifted to the Royal United Hospital in Bath, but was later transferred to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

It is understood that a fire engine had been approaching in the opposite direction to Mr Lee and the herd on their way to answer a 999 call.

Avon and Somerset Police have said that they are investigating the possibility that the herd may have be frightened by the fire engine's siren.
