Death Driver Feared Lynching
An angry crowd threatened to attack a motorist involved in an accident, which killed a three-year-old boy. The 45-year-old stopped his car immediately as he realised that Harley Huetson, of Clayton, Manchester, had been struck, but as on-lookers tried to give the youngster first aid, a number of them turned on the driver. The driver handed himself into police after being confronted by the angry people, even though he had been prepared to wait for officers at the scene, but instead he drove himself to a nearby police station to report the collision. Officers subsequently arrested him on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Little Harley was knocked down on Hackle Street, Clayton, at about 4.15pm on Wednesday.

Two British oil traders have been charged with breaching United Nations sanctions on Saddam Hussein's Iraq. Aftab Al Hassan, 65, from north London, appeared at City of London Magistrates on Thursday accused of funnelling $1.6m into accounts controlled by Saddam. A second man, Riad el Tahir, 70, from Esher, Surrey, appeared on 19 August. Neither man has yet entered a plea. Their arrests followed an investigation by the Serious Fraud Office into misuse of Iraq's oil-for-food programme.

A man has admitted hitting a neighbour's dog with a garden hoe but denies criminal damage. He is accused of killing a woman's dog following a series of disputes in which he threatened to become the "neighbour from hell", a court heard yesterday. Tricia Wales, 60, is bringing a private prosecution against Neville Hill, 48, alleging criminal damage after he hit her border terrier with a garden hoe. Chichester magistrates were told the blow fractured the dog's skull and it had to be put down.
Teen Sailor Excels
A teenager who has become the youngest person to sail solo around the world, has told the BBC he is delighted with his feat. Mike Perham, who celebrated his 17th birthday while on the journey, crossed the finish line at Lizard Point off the Cornish Coast. He said that although he was confident about beating the record he sometimes questioned what he was doing. After crossing the finish line, Mike was joined by his father to continue sailing back for a homecoming welcome at Portsmouth on Saturday.

Dangerous Dogs Seized By Police During Raids
Twenty dangerous dogs have been seized by officers in police raids in south London. During the operation - one of the largest of its kind - specialist officers raided the homes of suspected gang members and owners of illegal dogs and seized mostly pit bull terrier type dogs from 12 addresses in Lambeth.

Twenty Dogs Die In East Yorkshire House Fire
Humberside Fire and Rescue have confirmed that twenty dogs have died in a fire in East Yorkshire. It is understood that a fire broke out at the home of a private dog breeder on Graingers Road, Hornsea, at about 19:00 on Saturday.

Owners To Face Longer Sentences Over Dog Attacks
Irresponsible dog owners who allow their dog to attack people or assistance dogs will face tougher prison sentences from today, Tuesday. Changes to the Dangerous Dogs Act will also mean dog owners can now face prosecution if their dog attacks a person in their home or on any private property, except if they attack a trespasser.

New proposals for England and Wales could see owners of dogs that attack and kill face a life sentence in prison. Currently, the maximum sentence is two years for those convicted of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control. Under proposals put forward by the government, a range of new sentences would be available, from seven years to life.
