Van Crush Woman Dies
A woman has died after apparently being crushed by a van she was repairing, the ambulance service said. West Midlands Ambulance Service crews were called to Tunstall Road, Knypersley, about 5.25pm on Tuesday. A service spokeswoman said: "It is not clear exactly what happened but it appears the woman was crushed under a van that she had been working on." She added that it had not been possible to save the woman who was confirmed dead at the scene.
Care Failing Probed
Ambulance chiefs are investigating after a woman lay collapsed in a street for almost three hours before she was taken to hospital in a police van. The 53-year-old was cared for by police as she lay in the road after falling in Cardiff at about 6.40pm last Thursday. A newspaper reported that an ambulance was called, but she went to hospital in a police van at 9.20pm after a police officer brought a first aid kit. The Welsh Ambulance Service voiced its concern and said it was investigating after South Wales Police said the woman had a head wound.
Park 'Grows' From National Coalfield
Frickley Country Park is to be opened to the local community in Wakefield this weekend. Sir Bob Kerslake, Chief Executive of the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), will join Housing Minster John Healey, Yorkshire Forward Chairman, Terry Hodgkinson, Deputy Leader of Wakefield Council, Denise Jeffrey and town council representatives on Saturday 5 September to officially open the development. Formerly the site of Frickley Colliery pithead and tip, the 75 hectare (180 acre) area has undergone a transformation to become green, public open space. The park contains bridleways, footpaths, cycle routes, sports platforms and over 70,000 trees set in landscaped areas. The £7million investment by the National Coalfields Programme, a major regeneration programme seeking to breathe new life into former coalfields across England, delivered by the HCA has created a park designed for use by walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
Call To Build More Affordable Homes
Housing charity Shelter Scotland is calling on Scottish Ministers to make the upcoming Scottish budget a 'Budget for Homes' by investing an extra £200m a year in new affordable homes to rent. The charity is calling on Cabinet Secretary for Finance John Swinney to make homelessness and bad housing his top priority and have calculated that an extra £200 million a year - or 0.6% of the Scottish budget - would help Scotland build 10,000 affordable homes to rent each year for the next three years. The call is contained in the charity's new report, Building Solutions, which is being submitted to the Finance Secretary as he prepares for the Scottish budget next month.
Degrees Of Prison Care
All prison officers should be educated to degree level to help give them the necessary skills for the "challenging" job, a penal reform charity has said. While many prisoners use their 'spare time' to study for such qualifications, prison officers in England and Wales currently have just eight weeks' training and do not need formal qualifications. The Howard League for Penal Reform said currently staff were "turnkeys... barely skilled or literate". However, the Prison Officers Association said personal qualities, not qualifications, helped make a good prison officer.
Commonwealth Games Legacy Plan
Planned investment of £23.5 million to ensure Scotland capitalises on the economic, social and cultural advantages of the 2014 Commonwealth Games was announced today. At the launch of a games legacy for Scotland at The People's Palace, First Minister Alex Salmond and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon outlined how the Scottish Government and its partners aim to deliver long lasting benefits from the Games. The plan has been launched with £18 million sportscotland funding from a total £25.5 million it has earmarked for the legacy.
