TV Star 'Guilty'

A former BBC television presenter who hit a teenager with a 3ft wooden pole in a fight outside a West Midlands bar has been jailed for two years. Ashley Blake was found guilty of wounding Greg Jones, 17, and intending to pervert the course of justice. Blake, 40, who presented Midlands Today, was sacked following his conviction at Birmingham Crown Court. Jurors heard he swung a patio umbrella pole above his head, hitting the teenager in the face. Greg Jones, who had been attending an 18th birthday party, suffered facial injuries to his lip and chin.

Tot Drowns

A one-year-old girl died accidentally after climbing upstairs and into a bath while her mother was asleep downstairs, a coroner has decided. Millie Louise Jones's mother Sian Jones was asleep and her father Barry Owen was outside when she got in the bath at her home in Shotton, Flintshire. The bath had water in after being run the night before and she drowned.

Trump's Wins Support

Outline planning approval has been given for development on five areas of land within the Menie estate, near Balmedie, in Scotland. These could form part of wider plans for Donald Trump's long-delayed major golf resort development. The Formartine Area Committee heard that Trump International Golf Links Scotland would however have to resolve land ownership issues before any of the five sites could be developed.

Stamps Of Honour Issued

Royal Mail has paid tribute to firefighters on six stamps issued this week. The 1st Class stamp shows two firefighters tackling a blaze, while on the 54p stamp a firefighter has donned specialist clothing and breathing apparatus to deal with a chemical incident. Often first on the scene at a traffic accident, more specialist equipment is in use on the 56p stamp as firefighters work to free the occupants of a vehicle. Flood rescue efforts by Fire and Rescue teams up and down the UK features on the 62p stamp. Firefighters trained in rescuing people from collapsed buildings using an array of equipment, including man's best friend are featured on the 81p stamp. Fire safety features on the 90p stamp. The new stamps' release also coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Auxiliary Fire Service who played a crucial part during WWII.

Communities Tackling Climate Change

Thirty seven projects across Scotland have received £3.5m to tackle climate change in their communities. Collectively, the innovative projects will reduce carbon emissions by over 250,000 tonnes - the equivalent of taking over 83,000 cars off the UK roads. Successful applicants in round five of the landmark Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) include an organic garden in Bothwell, a carbon reduction scheme on the small Orkney island of Eday and an eco-friendly education centre in Markinch, Fife. The announcement brings the total number of local pioneering CCF projects to 157.

BMA Gets New Face

Dr Shree Datta, a Specialist Registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology at Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton has been elected as the new Chair of the BMA's Junior Doctors Committee. Dr Datta will take up her post from Dr Andy Thornley when he steps down after a year in the post on 19th September.

Couple Found Dead In House
A man and woman have been found dead in a house in Birmingham. The couple, believed to be aged in their 30s, were found in a bedroom on Miranda Close in Frankley at about 10:00am. They were pronounced dead at the scene and the deaths are being treated as unexplained.

Second British Soldier Named
The Ministry of Defence has named the second British soldier killed in Afghanistan on Saturday. While patrolling Lashkar Gah, Sgt Andrew Jones, 35, of the Royal Engineers, died alongside Trooper Andrew Howarth, of The Queen's Royal Lancers on Saturday.

Pair Jailed Over Iraq Body Armour Deal
Two arms dealers who sold military body armour to entities in the middle east and Iraq were sentenced this week after an investigation by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). Southwark Crown Court was told on Tuesday that, Jason Teal and Glynn Jones sent hundreds of bulletproof body armour and helmets to Iraq and Kuwait among other destinations.

'First Class' Halted By Welsh Secretary
The new Welsh Secretary of State has said she will no longer use first class rail travel. Cheryl Gillan revealed the change as she met Labour First Minister Carwyn Jones, Head of the Welsh Assembly Government, at his Cardiff Bay office. The Cardiff-born minister and her officials will also travel 2nd class.
