Transsexual Moved

The High Court has said that the earlier refusal to move a transsexual prisoner from a men's jail to a women's prison is a violation of human rights. Deputy Judge David Elvin QC quashed Justice Secretary Jack Straw's decision to keep the 27-year-old, who cannot be identified, in a male prison. Referred to as 'A', the prisioner is serving a life sentence for manslaughter and attempted rape, committed when a man. London's High Court heard the prisoner should be moved within a few weeks.

Cabinet Meets At Olympic Park

The Government has held its first Cabinet meeting since the summer recess at the Olympic Park. It was the latest in a series of Cabinet meetings that the Government has been holding around the UK. The meeting was held in the site offices of the contractor building the Aquatics Centre on the Park. Beforehand, Ministers spoke with workers in the site canteen. Some Ministers also went on a tour of the Park to see how construction is progressing.

Teacher Training 'Wasted'

The Scottish Government has insisted that councils have been given money to reduce class sizes, and thereby create more positions for teachers. The news comes after it was revealed that more than £60m has been spent training teachers who currently have little or no work. Scottish Labour last month indicated that only one in seven who qualified in Scotland this summer had got permanent posts. Labour, which has calculated the cost of teacher training, said talent and taxpayers' money was being wasted.

Lord Hunt Backs West Midland's Businesses

Speaking to the West Midlands Business Council, Energy and Climate Change Minister, Lord Hunt has expressed his admiration for the positive way West Midlands' business had faced the challenges of the recession. He pledged that the Government would continue to do everything it could to insure a reliable, cost effective energy supply for business. "We recognise the importance of secure, reliable and affordable energy supplies for business, particularly in these tough economic times. The recent fall in energy prices is good news for business and we are looking at making sure that businesses, large and small can feel the benefits of that and get secure energy contracts in place for the future," he said.

Nature Reserve Given 'Green Light'

Morgan Glen in Larkhall has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve. The move - the first of its kind in South Lanarkshire's 12-year history - means Morgan Glen - covering approximately 40 hectares (99 acres) from Millheugh to Strutherhill - is now officially 'a place with special local natural interest, for people to enjoy and appreciate'.

EDF To Takeover British Energy
The Government welcomed EDF's proposed £12.5 billion takeover offer for British Energy Group and the British Energy Board's recommendation of the offer to its shareholders. The Government has committed to accept the cash offer of 774p per share for its 36% stake held by the Nuclear Liabilities Fund (NLF), subject to certain conditions.

Energy watchdog warns on price rises
Rising energy prices are posing a “serious threat” to British businesses, the energy watchdog has announced. Energywatch is to hold a meeting with business leaders and Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks during the Labour party conference in Brighton on Tuesday in order to discuss the effect that rising energy bills are having on the UK economy.

Olympic Park Wind Turbine Plan Shelved
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has decided against building a wind turbine on the Olympic Park site in east London. The ODA has insisted, however, that it remains committed to its sustainability targets and work is now underway to identify alternative options for renewable energy infrastructure across the Olympic Park.

Energy Forum Marks Milestone In Efforts
Speaking at the International Energy Forum (IEF) ministerial meeting in Saudi Arabia today, UK Energy Minister Charles Hendry highlighted the importance of international efforts to stabilise the cost of energy sources.

Investigation Underway Into Substation Explosion
An investigation has been launched into an explosion at an electricity substation in Leicestershire. Fire crews were called to reports of an explosion at the plant on Middlefield Lane in Hinckley at about 15:15 on Thursday. Emergency services set an exclusion zone around the site with nearby businesses evacuated for safety reasons.
