Mandelson's Visit To China Results In $500m Worth Of Trade & Investment Deals

Contracts and new investment deals between UK and Chinese enterprises worth over US$500m were agreed during the visit to China this week by Lord Mandelson UK First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Business, Innovation & Skills. Many of these new business partnerships demonstrate UK capacity in low carbon business solutions, which will benefit British businesses while helping China meet its tough environment and energy efficiency targets. Work Underway To Clear Landslide From A83

Work continues to clear a landslip on the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful road on the west coast of Scotland. Several hundred tonnes of material has been displaced from the hillside and is now resting on the A83 in Argyll. Earthmoving equipment has been deployed and a Geotechnical Engineer has inspected the area. The road is closed between Ardgartan and the top of the Rest and Be Thankful. There is a diversion route via Dalmally and Crianlarich, adding around an extra 55 miles to the journey.

Two years ago the road was closed for several weeks after a landslide at exactly the same spot. Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland Road contractor Transerv's Martin Spicer said: We've got another 100 to 200 tonnes of material to shift and we've got a fleet of wagons to do that."

Bannockburn School Trips

Thousands of school pupils will have the opportunity to visit Bannockburn, thanks to £180,000 funding for school trips to historic sites. Robert the Bruce's army is believed to have numbered around 6,000 when he arrived at Bannockburn to fight in the First Wars of Scottish Independence, but today he is outnumbered by armies of learners, Schools Minister Keith Brown said as he visited the site. The Scottish Government has provided conservation charity the National Trust for Scotland with the additional funding to subsidise school parties visiting Bannockburn, Culloden and Robert Burns' birthplace.
