Prison For Salford Robber

A 32-year-old drug addict who lashed out at a woman as he stole her car has been jailed for four and half years today.

Wesley Radford of Cambrai Crescent, Winton, Salford, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court to an offence of robbery and one of theft.

On 23 January 2009, his victim, a 34-year-old woman, was reversing her Citroen Xsara Picasso out of her drive in Eccles when Radford rode up to her on his pedal cycle.

As she was closing her gates, Radford leapt into her car and tried to drive off.

Concerned that her handbag, containing her house keys, was on passenger seat, she challenged Radford.

He swore at her and a struggle took place, during which Radford kicked out at his victim and struck her in the chest.

Radford drove off and minutes later went to the Co-op store in Irlam and stole 10 gammon joints worth almost £90, using the stolen Citroen as a getaway car.

Radford was arrested later that day.

He has a string of previous convictions for theft.

Detective Sergeant Roger Smethurst, of the Volume Crime Team at Swinton police station, said: "Radford was out that morning looking for a vulnerable target.

"When he selected one - a woman who was on her way to work - he set about getting his hands on her property and had no problem lashing out at her when he was challenged.

"Only one thought was in his mind - when he would get his next fix and his selfish and mindless behaviour left his victim feeling distressed.

"I hope this prison sentence will have an effect on stopping him stealing."
