Paper Folds
'The London Paper' will be given away for the last time today. The free newspaper's closure was announced last month by New International after it recorded pre-tax losses of £12.9m. The evening paper was launched on 4 September 2006, four days after the Associated Newspapers's free paper London Lite hit the streets. It was dubbed the battle of the freesheets as publishers targeted young commuters who access news on websites and do not expect to pay for a paper. London now has three City-wide free papers. The Metro and City AM which are distributed in the morning and the London Lite.
Scottish Budget 'Counts Carbon'
The Scottish Government has become the first administration in the world to produce a carbon assessment alongside its budget. In a unique move, John Swinney, published the first Carbon Assessment of the Budget for 2010-2011 together with the draft economic budget brought to Parliament yesterday. "The Scottish Government recognises that climate change will have far reaching effects on Scotland's economy, its people and its environment and is determined to play its part in rising to this challenge. By publishing our Carbon Assessment of the Budget, we are taking a significant, and to some extent experimental, step towards recognising carbon implications in the Budget process," he said.
Wales Road Closed
The A465 Heads of the Valleys road is closed in both directions near Merthyr Tydfil after a serious accident. South Wales Police are at the scene directing traffic following the collision between the A4060 at Dowlais and the A470 at Cefn Coed Y Cymmer. The A465 is expected to be closed for some time while police carry out an investigation. South Wales Police said no more details about the incident were available at the moment.
Mayor Invites US To Olympics
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has urged US companies to come to London and take full advantage of the business investment opportunities developing at London's Olympic Park. With the Olympic and Paralympics Games less than three years away, US companies still have the opportunity to bid for millions of pounds worth of contracts by registering with CompeteFor, a unique business brokerage service for contracts associated with the London 2012 Games. These contracts run across many different sectors including catering, logistics and the construction of venue 'overlay', including the digital screen that will wrap around the outside of the main stadium. They are also being invited to invest now in the business legacy of the Games.
US Engineering Firm Acquired
Balfour Beatty, the international engineering, construction, investment and services Group, has confirmed that it has agreed to buy Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB), the employee-owned engineering firm in New York City, for $626 million. In a letter to all employees sent by the CEO of Parsons Brinckerhoff, Keith Hawksworth, explained: "The combination [of Balfour Beatty] with PB creates an organisation with world-class capabilities in project development (including financing), design, management or delivery of construction services, and the operations and maintenance that can be provided through our combined local office- global footprint."

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games remain "on time and within budget", a report claimed today. Data published by the Government and Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) confirmed anticipated final costs had risen by £21m. This means the cost has jumped to £7.262bn from £7.241bn since the last report. This is equivalent to an increase of 0.

A man has been charged with two counts of sexual assault on public transport in Tower Hamlets earlier this year. Sadikur Rahman, 40, of Shrewsbury Road, Forest Gate, has been charged in connection with two incidents on route 339 buses in Tower Hamlets.
