Wales Road Tragedy
A motorcyclist has died after a weekend accident. The victim, a 26-year-old, was killed at about 3pm on Sunday on the A539 between Hanmer and Penley, near Wrexham. The motorbike was the only vehicle involved in the crash and the road was closed for five hours. Anyone with information is asked to call 0845 6071001 (Welsh language), 0845 6071002 (English) or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Fewer passengers are using the London Underground. The transport system has recorded its biggest monthly fall in journeys for 20 years. Commuters made 190,000 fewer journeys in August. Transport for London blamed the recession and job cuts. Journeys to central London and the capital's financial district were particularly affected.
Ex Welsh Slate Directors Jailed
Three former senior executives of Alfred McAlpine Slate Ltd have been given jail sentences, after admitting they had deliberately overstated the company's production and sales figures for some years. Around 44% (over £10 million) of the company's reported debtors were fiction. An example of deception included showing auditors a stockpile of crates of roofing slate; the outer crates full but the inner crates empty. Customer letters were created to give the impression that debtors' payments were in the pipeline, delivery notes and transportation invoices for non-existent consignments were forged.
Trident Opposed
Around two thirds of voters are opposed to the replacement of the Trident defence missile system, according to a new poll. The poll, by YouGov for the Left Foot Forward blog, puts pressure on the government to shelve renewal of the missile system or at the least delay the decision just as cabinet ministers have been tasked by Chancellor Alistair Darling with finding cuts within their department. The poll shows 63% of respondents opposed the government's plans to renew the Trident nuclear deterrent with 23% saying that Britain should replace Trident with an equally powerful missile.
