Search intensifies for missing Portadown man

The police mountain rescue team have entered the search for a Portadown pensioner missing since Saturday afternoon.

Ronald McBroom (65) was last seen on Saturday night in King Street in the town as he returned to his Clanbrassil home. Passers-by and a nearby CCTV camera have placed Mr McBroom at Shillington's Bridge, which is on his route home, shortly after 11pm.

Mr McBroom, known to be a keen fisherman, may have approached the nearby Bann River which was swollen by recent downpours. Search co-ordinator David Hutchinson made another appeal for information and would especially like to hear from taxi drivers who were in the area at the time.

Police search teams will also be assisted by volunteers from the Lough Neagh rescue service over the coming days. On Saturday, the volunteer team will search the mouth of the River Bann where it meets Lough Neagh, following efforts by police divers and lifeboats from Ardboe and Kinnego to search the river around Portadown during the weeks.

Search teams covered the riverbank on Tuesday from the Bann Bridge to the M1 motorway bridge. On Wednesday, police air-support and underwater diving teams joined the search.

Mr McBroom is five-foot-eleven-inches tall, thinly built with grey hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing moleskin trousers, a T-shirt with a diamond design, a navy jumper with an Argyle pattern and brown shoes.

Portadown police can be contacted on 028 3833 2424.
