Newry Street Brawl Broken-Up
A large police presence - including a force helicopter - was needed yesterday to have nine men arrested after vicious fighting broke out in Newry.
Police were called to the scene at around 4.20pm on Monday after a brawl broke out on the Dublin Road, near the Cloughoge Roundabout on the outskirts of the city.
It is understood to have been a dispute among foreign nationals, all aged in their 20s.
Detectives are also investigating reports that a shot was fired during the trouble and confirmed that a suspected firearm and a number of other items were seized.
Some vehicles were also taken away for examination.
One man was hurt in the disturbance. Police said his injuries were neither life-threatening nor caused by a gunshot.
SDLP Newry and Armagh MLA Dominic Bradley has praised the swift action of police following a disturbance close to the Cloughoge Roundabout in Newry.
"My understanding is that some form of disturbance took place under the railway bridge beside the Cloughoge roundabout involving around eight people.
"Police arrived and apprehended a number of people and I believe a firearm may have been recovered from the scene," he said, yesterday.
"I have no doubt that had police not arrived in a prompt and timely fashion then someone could have been seriously injured or even worse someone could have been killed."
Mr Bradley also said he believed most of the men live in the Republic of Ireland and noted they are all foreign nationals.
He said it may take longer for police to interview them because of language difficulties.
