Show organisers bow to Lord's Day advocates
The organisers of an agricultural show in a loyalist County Antrim town have announced they have scrapped plans to hold the event on a Sunday for the first time.
The Ballymena Show has been running for 102 years and is normally held on a Friday and Saturday.
But this year the show's organisers the County Antrim Agricultural Association (CAAA) said they wanted to extend the event for the first time to run over three days in May, including a Sunday.
Though organisers insisted the application was an entirely practical one and was never intended to be political or offensive. They had anticipated the Sunday would host a range of leisure activities including fishing, shooting and conservation.
However the chairman of the CAAA Brian King announced on Wednesday the withdrawal of their application to extend the event following fierce opposition from the Presbyterian Church and the Orange Order in the town.
The Presbytery of Ballymena said in a statement last week it would be "gravely offensive and against the teaching of the bible" to hold the show on a Sunday.
A local Orange lodge in the area said they would endeavour to stop the show "regardless of the consequences".
The Ballymena Show will now run, as in past years from 24-25 May.

Man Charged After Glenarm Shooting
Detectives investigating the incident on Feystown Road on Monday, 25 November, have charged a 41-year-old man with attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, and criminal damage. The accused is due to appear at Ballymena Magistrates’ Court today, Thursday, 28 November.

Minister Reacts To Teachers' Union Ballot Threat
Education Minister Paul Givan has responded to the announcement by several teachers' unions that they plan to ballot their members for industrial action over 2024/25 pay. Earlier this year, the Minister provided funding to successfully resolve the long-running industrial dispute over teachers' pay for 2021-24.

Police Appeal Following Burglary In Ahoghill
Detectives are appealing for information following a report of a burglary in Ahoghill on Tuesday, 12th November. Police received a report that the back door of a house on the Ballymena Road was forced open shortly before 6pm.

Motorists advised to plan around Balmoral Show
Motorists attending the Balmoral Show are asked to leave extra time for their journey and be aware of the ongoing roadworks on the M1/Westlink. Balmoral show organisers, Roads Service and HMC, the contractors for the M1/Westlink works, have been liaising to facilitate the large number of visitors expected at the show.

RTÉ has announced that applications for The Late Late Toy Show 2023 have officially opened. The broadcaster’s annual Christmas show has started with the search underway for this year’s ‘Toy Show superstars’. Comedian Patrick Kielty is to host the show after he was announced as successor to Ryan Tubridy.
