Irish broadband programme announcement expected

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is expected to reveal the outline of a State broadband programme during an announcement of a €60 million investment in broadband technology that will revolutionise internet access for people in regional areas throughout Ireland.

The investment will go towards creating a high-speed fibreoptic network that will service 20 cities and towns - with an additional 20 towns to be potentially added to the list later this year.

However, it is thought that Mr Ahern will reveal details of the creation of a much larger network around Ireland, as suggested by the recent series of talks between his department and a major provider of broadband technology.

If the move to create an overall broadband strategy is announced, this would mean significantly lower costs for local authorities and small companies who will be offering access to consumers over the network.

In addition, an overall development policy would provide a coherent management structure for the whole fibreoptic network, and not just for the regional "ring" projects.
